Student housing in Vienna – what you need to know

Please note that in Austria, universities usually do not manage their own student housing. Instead, accommodation is provided by external organizations or private operators. Some well-known providers in Vienna include:

Shared Flats (WGs) and Apartment Rent

Shared Flats (WGs) in Vienna

If you’d like to live with other students, a shared flat (WG – WohnGemeinschaft) can be a great choice. You will usually have your own room while sharing the kitchen, bathroom, and living spaces. This option is budget-friendly and helps you meet new people quickly.

Advantages of WGs:

  • Lower costs compared to single apartments
  • Often already furnished and equipped with internet and appliances
  • Easy way to connect with fellow students

Where to look for WGs:

Tip: Please always check that you can officially register your address (getting your Meldezettel) and make sure to view the apartment in person before signing a contract or transferring money.

Rental Apartments

If you prefer to live independently, renting your own apartment is the right choice. Vienna offers everything from charming historic apartments (Altbau) to modern new builds with high-quality facilities for reasonable prices.

What to consider when renting:

  • A deposit (Kaution) of three months’ base rent is common
  • The warm rent (Warmmiete) usually includes heating and water, but electricity and internet are extra
  • Many apartments are unfurnished, sometimes even without a kitchen or light fixtures
  • You must be able to register your address officially with the local authorities

You can look for a rental on websites like Willhaben and Immobilienscout24.

Tip: Take time to compare prices and locations before making a decision. Many students also post their own “housing wanted” ads with a photo, budget, and preferred districts.

FAQs

Prices vary depending on the provider and location. In student residences, you can expect between €350 and €900 per month. Shared flats are usually more affordable, while private apartments may cost significantly more depending on size and district.

We recommend applying as early as possible, ideally 3–6 months before your arrival. Many student residences in Vienna are in high demand, especially for the winter semester.

Yes, many international students find rooms in WGs. However, some flatmates may prefer German-speaking roommates, so it helps to have at least basic German knowledge.

The Meldezettel is your official proof of residence in Austria. You must register your address within three working days of moving in. Without it, you cannot apply for health insurance, open a bank account, or renew your residence permit.

Yes, many students start in a residence for their first semester and later move into a WG or apartment once they are more familiar with the city.
